According to the Merriam Webster on-line dictionary,
expectations are defined as “A strong belief that something will happen or be
the case in the future; a belief that someone will or should achieve
something.” In the case of PBIS,
expectations relate to what is appropriate behavior in a certain setting
(classroom, common areas of the school, playground, etc). No matter the location, there should be “3-5
explicitly stated school-wide expectations; expectations are functional; and
are stated in positive terms.” The rules
are how we go about achieving the expectations.
Expectations and rules are supported through routines which are taught,
re-taught, and practiced using school-wide lessons. Throughout the process (and the year),
students receive feedback and positive rewards for demonstrating and living by
the PBIS Expectations here at Longfellow Elementary.
